🍳 Oil & greaseHow to remove shirt collar & cuff grime

Sebum stain · why shampoo works so well

The grayish band on dress-shirt collars and cuffs is oily grime: skin sebum mixed with dead skin cells and dust. Washing in the machine alone doesn't get the inside of the collar clean because there's little friction there, so it gradually builds up and turns yellow.

🔬 Why this order works

Sebum is an oil, so you need a grease-dissolving surfactant. That's why shampoo, which is made to wash sebum off the scalp, and grease-strong dish soap work so well on collar grime.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

👕 By fabric

⚪ White cotton & linen

Shampoo pre-treatment → warm wash → oxygen bleach to remove the yellow.

🎨 Colors & synthetics

Pre-treat with shampoo, then wash. Bleach only after testing, and only color-safe.

🧶 Wool, silk & cashmere

For grime around a knit neckline, dab with fingers dampened with wool detergent. Scrubbing with a brush causes pilling.

🚫 Don't

  • Scrubbing hard with a stiff brush — the collar frays.
  • Ironing with yellow grime left — heat sets it even yellower.

⏳ If it has already dried

Collar grime built up over months mostly comes out if you pre-treat with shampoo, then soak overnight in warm oxygen bleach solution.

💡 Tip

Just getting into the habit of dabbing a little shampoo inside the collar on the evening you wear a shirt, before it goes into the machine, stops grime from building up.

❓ Common questions

What's the difference between collar-grime cleaner and shampoo?

Collar-grime cleaners add sebum-dissolving surfactants and enzymes to make them a bit stronger. Shampoo works on the same principle and is enough for most collar grime.

I take my dress shirts to the dry cleaner every time, but the collar grime stays.

Dry cleaning doesn't use water, so water-soluble soiling like sweat may not come out as well. For cotton shirts, washing in water works better on collar grime. You can also ask the dry cleaner to wet-wash them.
